Too much oil is just as bad as too little engine oil.. Let this mangled Jaguar V6 be a warning.
It is always important to check and change the oil regularly. After all, it is the lifeblood of your engine.. It's responsible for lubricating the friction pairs that work together to create all that power.. Low oil can be a disaster. But too much oil is just as bad.
Eric from the YouTube channel I Do Cars managed to recover a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 engine from a 2017 Jaguar XE sedan that failed because it was too full of oil. According to the scrap center that sold the engine, nine liters of oil came out of the pan when it was drained.. The maximum capacity for this engine is only 5.7 liters.
Disassembling the heads shows signs that something has gone wrong. This engine has only been used for 100k km so everything looks relatively clean. But metal flakes in the oil filter and scars on the cam journals indicate catastrophic damage.
Of course, once the heads come off, Eric discovers that the two front pistons are no longer secured properly to the crankshaft. He also discovers that they were previously touching the head – something that should not happen during normal operation. Removing the oil pans reveals a ton of torn bearing material, including some giant chunks.
When you remove the pistons, you can see a bunch of burnt metal at the bottom of the connecting rods and a bunch of damage on the cylinder walls. When the engine is full of oil, the crankshaft sprays excess oil into the crankcase, turning it into foam. As this foam is drawn into the oil pump, it aerates the oil to the point where it can no longer lubricate the metal. The result is a ton of friction and heat that quickly kills the engine. And that's exactly what happened here.
