Google Registry, the team at Google that is responsible for managing top-level domains, has announced the launch of a new .meme domain.

Google Registry has already granted access to this new domain to 10 sites. Some of these sites are dedicated to memes that were popular in the past ( grumpycat.meme, nyancat.meme, keyboardcat.meme). Also meme” domain received Know Your Meme — a site dedicated to describing Internet memes. It is now available at knowyour.meme.

“Memes are the epitome of internet culture that has captured the eyes, hearts and minds of millions of people.. So it’s only fitting that they can now live in their own top-level domain: .meme,” Google said in a blog post.

Now anyone can access the domain and host their website on it, but for an additional fee and as part of the early access program. And starting December 5th, .meme domains will become publicly available at the base annual registrar price.

Note that this is not the first non-traditional domain name in the Google registry.. For example, the .dad and .boo domains were previously launched. And last month, the .ing domain also appeared, sparking a rush for visually appealing addresses like think.ing and buy.ing and a significant jump in prices for such addresses.
