Atlético – Real 4:2 (after d.v.): match review and game result 01/18/2024

On Thursday, January 18, the Madrid derby between Atlético and Real Madrid took place at the Civitas Metropolitano as part of the 1/8 finals of the Spanish Cup.

This time the match was not as productive as in the semi-finals of the Super Cup, but the teams still pleased the audience with many goals.

But for some reason, most of them occurred with the direct help of the players of the team that missed.

In the first case, Antonio Rüdiger scored, who with his unsuccessful header gave an assist to Samuel Lino. The lateral side of the “mattress players” outplayed Andrei Lunin at close range.

The return gift arrived before the break. Jan Oblak decided to play on the way out and punch away the free kick. However, the Slovenian did not properly hit the ball, and it bounced off his hand into the goal.

Not to say that the break had a big impact on the players' ability to prevent mistakes.. The third happened again at the Blancos goal and this time Lunin was fully responsible for it.

In the 57th minute, Marcos Llorente passed the ball to Antoine Griezmann, but Eduardo Camavinga blocked it with his foot.

The ball changed its trajectory and flew towards the goal line. The Ukrainian goalkeeper of Real Madrid went for the ball, but unsuccessfully knocked it out, hitting Rudiger. Alvaro Morata took advantage of this and sent the ball into an already empty goal.

It seemed that Carlo Ancelotti's team would no longer be able to win back, because the home team had the advantage. But Jude Bellingham had his say again, and eight minutes before the end of regulation time he provided an assist to Joselu.

The Spaniard, who was alone in front of an empty corner of the goal, could only head his teammate's serve. The game went into overtime.

Real took the ball, but Diego Simeone's men didn't mind. Control of the ball did not save the Los Blancos from conceding another goal, because the best scorer in the history of Atlético took matters into their own hands, or, to be more precise, their legs.

Once again it all started with a mistake when Vinicius Junior lost the ball in his own half of the field. Griezmann picked up the ball and ran across the flank into the penalty area near the goal line. The Brazilian tried to interfere, but to no avail.

The Colchoneros forward approached the goal and, at an acute angle, decided to shoot into the far upper corner, which Lunin, alas, failed to cope with.

Soon the “royal club” won back for the third time, but Dani Ceballos’ goal was canceled due to offside in Bellingham.

But Atlético scored the fourth: the home team carried out a cool attack, as a result of which Memphis Depay knocked the ball into the path of Rodrigo Riquelme. The young Spaniard beat Lunin with a touch and put an end to the match.

As a result, Atlético took revenge on Real for losing in the semi-finals of the Super Cup and won the right to compete in the quarter-finals of the national cup.
