In South Africa, perhaps the oldest burial in the world was discovered, which contained the remains of a distant relative of Homo sapiens – Homo naledi.

Famous paleoanthropologist Lee Berger announced an important find – the burial of hominids who lived in the Stone Age. They are believed to be ancient relatives of people who climbed trees.

“These are the oldest burials recorded in hominid history, predating evidence of Homo sapiens burials by at least 100,000 years,” the scientists wrote in the study, which was published in eLife.

This could revolutionize our understanding of human evolution, since it was believed that it was the size of the brain that allowed us to do conscious actions that make sense, in particular the process of burying the dead. Similar burials were already found in 2018

Homo naledi named after cave system « Rising Star “, where the first bones were found in 2013.

“These discoveries show that burial practices were not limited to H. sapiens or other larger-brained hominids,” the researchers said.

So far, the ability to bury is not the only sign that Homo naledi have a propensity for complex emotional and cognitive behavior.
