Apple has announced that it will introduce the RCS messaging standard to its smartphones next year. ( Rich Communication Services). This feature will be supported through a software update.
The advent of RCS will provide messaging between iPhone and Android users with a wide range of functions in the style of Apple's iMessage messenger: message read notification, typing indicator, transfer of high-quality photos and videos, and the like.
At the same time, there is no talk of abandoning iMessage; it will continue to be used for communication between iPhone users. We are not talking about opening iMessage for platforms other than iOS.
“Later next year we will add support for RCS Universal Profile, a GSM Association standard. We believe that RCS Universal Profile will offer a better experience compared to SMS or MMS. This will work alongside iMessage, which will continue to be the best and most secure messaging experience for Apple users,” a company spokesperson told 9to5Mac.
The publication notes that Apple's decision was made under pressure from regulators and competitors such as Google and Samsung.
As NV Techno wrote, earlier this month Google, together with key European operators, filed a complaint with the European Commission regarding iMessage. Companies are demanding that Apple messenger be compatible with other devices.
