Did you know that in the near future your inactive Gmail or Google Docs profiles may turn to dust, like the Russian occupiers somewhere in the Donbass? But in the case of Google, this can be prevented.
If a Gmail account you haven't used for the past two years has value to you, a few clicks can change that.
Google's new policy
Back in 2020, Google said it would delete content stored in an inactive account ( but not the account itself) to save storage space.
And today, Google is updating its inactivity policy so that old accounts that aren't in use will be deleted later this year.
If your Google account has not been used or you have not signed in for at least 2 years, Google will delete it. In addition to making your email address unavailable, Gmail messages, Calendar events, Docs and other files, and Google Photos backups will also be deleted.
How to prevent deletion?
Regardless of whether you use your Google account as a username for other accounts, you should update all connected email accounts. This is because if Google deletes your inactive account, you won't be able to recover accounts from other services that use it as your primary email address.
Login to your account
The best way to keep your account is to actually use your account to give it two more years. At least this will give you time to decide what to do next, even if you're just collecting spam in one place.
If your account was suspended for violating the terms of service or for other reasons, you can try to appeal the decision to Google.
Create a backup
Make sure you have a local copy of your most valuable images and documents.
Cloud storage is a way of storing digital files and memories that allows us to access files from any device.
Make sure you have a plan B and have the files saved somewhere within your complete control, such as a computer or hard drive that you have on your shelf.
Think about the future
Add a recovery email address, this can be key if you have your email account blocked or hacked in the future.
