Encrypted messaging service Signal is testing the ability for customers to use usernames so they don't have to give out their phone number to people they're talking to.

“It’s no secret that we’ve been working on moving usernames to Signal for some time now.. After rounds of internal testing, we have reached a point where we believe the community… can help us conduct extensive testing before public launch,” Signal announced.

The official release of such a feature, as recently announced by Signal President Meredith Whittaker, is planned for early 2024.

You can take part in testing by installing a special version of the Signal application (instructions are available on the company blog) and registering a new account with a new phone number. After registering and logging in, you need to change the settings « Phone number» in the section « Confidentiality». In addition to actually creating a unique username, you will be able to copy a link to a new profile. It will also be possible to create groups of users who can see your phone number or username.

At the same time, Signal warns that testing participants will face many problems with the application.. In particular, push notifications may not work.

Signal, launched in 2014, already has about 50 million users, according to Statista.. The messaging service uses end-to-end encryption to ensure that no one other than the sender and recipient can read the message.. The messenger was considered super reliable, but, as NV Techno wrote, Signal user accounts were hacked en masse.
