Scientists have detected a cosmic ray with an energy level a million times higher than any human invention can demonstrate.
Our planet is constantly bombarded by cosmic rays, coming from both local sources in our galaxy and from distant extragalactic sources. These cosmic rays do not cause problems – the Earth's atmosphere and magnetic field provide effective protection against them. However, scientists are monitoring changes caused by such ultra-high energy cosmic radiation ( abbreviated as UHECR).
In a study published in the journal Science, the Telescope Array Collaboration, a project bringing together observers from several countries, reported the discovery of a new UHECR with an energy level of approximately 244 exaelectronvolts ( EeV).
UHECRs like the one described by the Utah researchers ( USA) are incredibly rare and, as scientists believe, are triggered by the most processes in the Universe associated with high energy levels, such as black holes and gamma-ray bursts.
The energy level of the latest discovered UHECR, scientists explain, is about a million times higher than what the most powerful human-made particle accelerators can produce.
Previously, UHECRs with an energy level of 320 EeV were discovered in the Northern Hemisphere ( 1991), 213 EeV ( 1993), 280 EeV ( 2001). In the Southern Hemisphere, no values exceeding 166 EeV have been recorded..
