Merseyside Police in the UK began using artificial intelligence to identify traffic violators. The use of phones and seat belts will be monitored.

A special spy van with a two-camera system equipped with AI appeared on the roads of the region this week. The first camera is installed at a slight angle and can identify a mobile phone near the driver's ear or an unfastened seat belt of the driver or passenger of the car.. The second camera is designed so that it can be seen whether the driver is using a mobile phone to send text messages, writes the BBC.

Information about recorded violations is checked twice, after which it is transferred to the police, where the data is processed again. If the information about the violation is confirmed, the police will notify the driver of the measures taken.

The police convince us that the goal is not to increase the number of fines issued, but to increase the level of security.

“New technology should… encourage people to stop using their phones and start wearing seat belts. Hopefully now everyone knows that we use this technology and it will stop them from using their phone and will encourage them to wear their seat belts,” says Sgt. Garrett Berry

Last year, 19 people were killed and 440 seriously injured on the roads of Merseyside, home to about 1.4 million people.

NV Techno previously wrote that in the USA, thanks to artificial intelligence, they were able to detain a drug dealer. It was possible to expose the criminal thanks to the analysis of data from traffic cameras regarding his route.
