A new study by a team from New York University sheds light on why eyewitness testimony is not always reliable evidence of guilt.
According to study leader Thomas Nyman, about 70% of people found not guilty in court were victims of misidentification.. This fact highlights the importance of studying aspects of identification to prevent miscarriages of justice.
A study conducted in Finland involving 1,325 participants identified several factors influencing eyewitness identification accuracy.

The most significant was distance: the further the witness was from the criminal, the more difficult it was to accurately determine his identity. Mistakes occurred if the witness and the criminal were separated by only 20 meters. Sunglasses also reduced identification accuracy, while wearing a hood to hide the face had little effect.
The findings, published in the journal Psychology, Crime & Law, raise questions about the actual conditions under which criminal identification occurs and highlight the importance of combating unreliable testimony to prevent wrongful convictions.
Naiman emphasized that their project is aimed at protecting people and should prevent possible errors of justice.
