Polish tuner restored classic BMW 6 Series: photo

The BMW 6 Series, produced from 1976 to 1989, was a large touring coupe with a long, pointed nose and crisp styling, resulting in a car that was beautiful and desirable.. After modifications by a Polish tuning studio, the interior of the BMW 6 Series became very luxurious.

Polish tuner Carlex Design took on the project of giving this beautiful BMW a luxurious interior, much better than what the manufacturer could offer from the factory at the time. Carlex builds seven of these vehicles.

The first finished copy (see. gallery below) is a 1986 635 CSi with an ink black body and a set of multi-spoke wheels. Carlex doesn't change the classic coupe's edgy exterior styling. The only thing worth noting is the company badges and emblems attached to the outside.

The only mechanical change is a revised suspension. Carlex doesn't give details about the changes, but says the settings are sporty but soft. In Europe, the '86 635 CSi had a 3.5-liter inline-six engine producing 215 horsepower or 182 bhp. for version with catalytic converter. This one has a four-speed automatic transmission.

The salon is where Carlex focuses most. The company uses a patination process on brown leather, which gives the upholstery the deep appearance of naturally aged leather.. The material covers parts of the seats, center console, instrument panel, door panels and rear seats.

Patinated leather even appears on instrument dials. Carlex makes numerals and needles from hand-polished steel. The seats use the original frames, but Carlex uses stiffer, more compact foam for the cushions. The company claims that the chairs are more ergonomic than factory parts.

Carlex uses a Blaupunkt Bremen SQR 46 DAB radio, which looks like a classic stereo with cassette player, but has a USB connection under the hood. It also supports Bluetooth. The unit keeps a center console that looks like a car from the 1980s while offering modern conveniences.

Each of these updated 6 Series models requires 1,200 hours of work to complete.. It takes a lot of time to patina leather. By comparison, Carlex says typical builds take about 340 hours.
