Meta will soon disable cross-platform Facebook and Instagram integration. This feature allowed Instagram users to communicate with Facebook friends directly through DM.
Starting mid-December, users will no longer be able to chat on Instagram with Facebook accounts.. Conversations started earlier will still be available for reading.
“Once cross-app chatting becomes unavailable, … you will not be able to start new conversations or calls with Facebook accounts on Instagram. All existing chats with Facebook accounts will become read-only. This means that you and your interlocutors will not be able to send new messages in these chats. Facebook accounts won't be able to see your online status or whether you've viewed a message. “All existing chats with Facebook accounts will not be moved to the Facebook or Messenger inbox,” the Instagram guide said.
Cross-platform Facebook and Instagram integration was added in 2020. Meta does not provide any information regarding the reasons for discontinuing its support.
9to5Google speculates that this may be due to the EU's new Digital Markets Act, aimed at stopping platform owners from gaining monopoly power.. The law, in particular, contains requirements for large companies to ensure interaction between messaging platforms.
