The board of directors of the American AI laboratory OpenAI, which developed ChatGPT, fired Sam Altman from his position as CEO. The company will be temporarily led by current CTO Mira Murati.

Altman is also resigning from OpenAI's board of directors.

Altman's resignation followed a board deliberation process that concluded that he had not always been consistently forthcoming in his communications with the board, which impeded his ability to perform his responsibilities. The board of directors no longer has confidence in his ability to manage OpenAI,” the statement said.

The company thanked Altman for his contribution to the founding and development of OpenAI.

At the same time, the board of directors assured that Mira Murati, as the head of the company’s research, product and security areas, has a unique set of skills, understanding of the company's values, operations and business” to take on the role of interim CEO.

At the same time, the company announced a formal search for a permanent CEO.

Altman has led OpenAI since 2019.
