End-to-end encryption is an important level of security. This feature helps ensure that neither Meta nor other third parties can access the chat content.
In a blog post, Meta said the end-to-end encryption that uses the Signal protocol took a long time to roll out, as the company had to rebuild certain features like the sticker library and chat storage from scratch.
“It took years because we spent time getting it right. Our engineers, cryptographers, designers, policy experts and product managers worked tirelessly to rebuild Messenger's functionality from the ground up,” said Messenger CEO Loredana Crisan.

Meta first introduced end-to-end encryption functionality in Messenger during limited testing in 2016. In 2021, the company introduced an encryption feature for voice and video calls. In January 2022, the company began providing an end-to-end encryption option for group chats and calls. In August 2022, Meta began testing end-to-end encryption for select chats. In August 2023, the company said it plans to introduce end-to-end encryption by default by the end of the year.
With this update, Messenger is one step closer to achieving the full end-to-end security that Meta WhatsApp already has.. DMs on Instagram will get end-to-end encryption when the feature rolls out to Messenger.
Besides this security update, Meta is also launching new features for Messenger. Now you can edit messages within 15 minutes after sending. There is also control over the playback speed of voice messages. ( they can be speeded up to 1.5x or 2x). The interface for disappearing messages has been changed.
