Google is suing scammers believed to be hiding in Vietnam. Attackers used the company's name and its artificial intelligence chatbot Bard to spread viruses.
In online ads, scammers offered users to download “ side-loaded” version of Bard, although the chatbot is not a paid service or program that needs to be downloaded – it is available for free on the website.
Instead of a chatbot, users installed malicious software on their computers that allowed attackers to steal social network credentials, The Verge writes.
Google's lawsuit also alleges that scammers specifically used promoted Facebook posts to promote their malware.
“The defendants are three individuals, whose identities are unknown, who claimed to provide, among other things, the “latest version” of Google Bard for download.. The defendants are in no way affiliated with Google, although they pretend to be.. “They used Google's trademarks, specifically Google, Google AI and Bard, to entice unsuspecting victims to download malicious software onto their computers,” the lawsuit states.
In a blog post, Google notes that the company has already sent about 300 requests to remove pages and sites of these scammers, but wants to see a ban on them creating domains in the future.
