IBM has stopped advertising in X ( Twitter). This happened after her ad appeared next to pro-Nazi content.

“IBM does not tolerate hate speech or discrimination, and we have immediately suspended all advertising on X while we investigate this completely unacceptable situation,” the company said in a statement, as quoted by the Financial Times.

The statement comes after Media Matters published a report that advertisements from major brands were found on X ( IBM, Apple, Oracle, Comcast, etc.. etc.), which were placed next to the content “which advertises Adolf Hitler and his Nazi party”. In one case, an Oracle advertisement was placed under a publication with a photograph of Hitler and his quote.. In another, next to an advertisement, there was a post praising the Third Reich.

X CEO Linda Yaccarino stated that discrimination is unacceptable and the platform is ready to combat its manifestations.

“X has been very clear about her efforts to combat anti-Semitism and discrimination. This has no place anywhere in the world – it’s disgusting and wrong,” she wrote in X.

Representatives of X in a comment to Engadget stated that the publications mentioned by Media Matters will no longer be subject to monetization and will be designated as sensitive content ( such marks stipulate that the user must additionally provide confirmation to view). At the same time, X said that the researchers supposedly saw these particular messages because they were actively looking for exactly this kind of content.

“Ads follow User X, in this case a Media Matters researcher, who was going to actively search for that content – that's how user targeting works,” the company said in a comment to the FT.

As NV Techno previously wrote, billionaire Elon Musk after acquiring Twitter ( from July 2023 – X) softened the moderation policy and laid off many employees who were involved in security on the platform. Now the platform, for example, does not consider posting Nazi symbols a violation of community rules.

The company also stopped actively fighting the spread of fakes, which is why the European Union recognized X as the largest source of disinformation.. This, coupled with Musk's controversial statements, led to the platform losing approximately 50% of its advertising revenue.
