Nepal becomes the second country in the world to ban TikTok nationally. Local authorities say the Chinese video app is harmful to society.
Nepal's Minister of Communications and Information Technology Rekha Sharma told Reuters that the government is now working on “ technical closure” of access to the application. According to the head of the Nepal Telecommunications Authority, Purushottam Khanal, Internet service providers have been asked to block access, and some of them have already done so.
Opposition leaders in Nepal criticized the move, saying the decision lacked effectiveness, maturity and accountability.
“There is also a lot of objectionable material on other social media. What is needed is regulation, not restriction,” said Pradeep Gyawali, a former foreign minister and senior leader of the communist United Marxist-Leninist Party of Nepal.
Officials claim that this popular application has been abused in the country.. Local media reported that over the past four years, more than 1,600 TikTok-related cybercrime cases have been reported in Nepal.
Nepal's neighbor India, as NV Techno wrote, banned TikTok along with dozens of other applications from Chinese developers in June 2020, saying they could jeopardize national security. TikTok called such bans erroneous and based on false beliefs.
