The second season of the Game of Thrones prequel series is expected to premiere in early summer 2024. However, work on the third, and even fourth, season is already in full swing.

Author and screenwriter George R.R. Martin, whose series of epic fantasy novels formed the basis of both series, intrigued by the news in a blog post about a trip to London. The continuation of the series for the third, and even more so the fourth, season was not officially confirmed. But Martin said he was already working on a script for them with the writing team and showrunner Ryan Condal.

“I also spent two days with Ryan Condal and his writing team talking about seasons three and four of House of the Dragon. It was a lively, fun discussion and we did a good job… Although two days wasn't enough. There’s so much to cover that I’m not sure twenty days would be enough,” Martin said in a blog post.

The writer also said that he saw preliminary versions of the first two episodes of the second season, and was pleased.

“Of course, I'm hardly objective when I talk about anything based on my own work… But I have to say that I think both episodes are absolutely brilliant ( and they're not even finished yet). But dark, mind you. Very dark. They can make you cry. I didn't cry myself, but one of my friends did. Powerful, emotional, stunning. Exactly what I like,” he noted.

Let us remind you that House of the Dragon is a prequel to the super-popular series Game of Thrones, based on the series of novels in the epic fantasy genre A Song of Ice and Fire. The first season, consisting of 10 episodes, described events 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones. The plot centers on the beginning of the end of the reign of House Targaryen. Over the course of eight episodes, season two will explore how the civil war in House Targaryen, known as the Dance of Dragons, began.
